Semantic and goal-oriented communications for U-MIMO THz systems
01.jpg

Hello! I am Zhihan Xu from Liaoning, China.

I completed my Bachelor in Electronic Engineering at Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, China from 2017-2021 and my MSc in wireless communication at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden from 2022-2024, where my research primarily focused on over-the-air computation, signal processing and software defined radio.

After graduating, I joined Ericsson for 6 months as a software test engineer, where I worked on 5GNR and NTN test. And then I joined TU Dresden till now as a research assistant and worked on semantic communication.

During my studies and research experience, I published one paper on IEEE ICC 2026. These experiences helped me develop hands-on understanding of research, collaborative skills and scientific communication.

As part of the TeraWireless project, I am currently a PhD candidate at TU Dresden. My research focuses on Semantic and goal-oriented communications for U-MIMO THz systems, including over-air-air computation, task-oriented representation learning, semantic-aware joint source–channel coding, and cross-layer resource optimization to study how to reliably transmit task-relevant information under latency/energy constraints and realistic THz channel/hardware impairments. I will also develop end-to-end simulation and evaluation pipelines, design semantic-aware transceiver components, and benchmark performance under realistic THz channel and hardware impairments to support the project goals.

Currently, I am working on an SDR-based over-the-air computation and semantic transmission testbed, investigating end-to-end task performance under practical issues such as synchronization errors, beam misalignment, blockage, and non-ideal RF front-ends. This research aims to bridge theory and real-world deployments of semantic communications for next-generation sensing and edge inference applications.

Being part of the TeraWireless project provides a unique opportunity to combine my background in over-the-air computation, SDR prototyping, and 5G/NTN testing with cutting-edge semantic communications research in an international team, while contributing to the development of practical, energy-efficient, low-latency 6G THz communication technologies.
